Greetings from Luwero District, Uganda! Visiting the Kampala Christian Orphanage, home to about 60 girls and boys aged 3-10, has been a wonderful privilege, I've particularly enjoyed encouraging them to read outside of normal school time:
You have my solemn word this picture is not staged! They asked for the books, a small collection I was able to buy locally, and sat down and started to read - or in the case of the younger children, follow the story through pictures. No easy feat reading in English when your mother tongue is Ugandan.
Also much enjoyed encouraging sporting activities:
Longstanding readers will be somewhat surprised to discover that this includes football! Although what this means is that I try to put myself in goal to find that I have 5 assistant goal keepers, 4 of whom are trying to hold my hand. So work in progress on this one.
The Orphanage is entirely dependent on foreign donations, alas, no local funding for such ventures. Particularly, there is the need for a new dormitory block, more details of which can be found in the video part one and part two, along with other pictures from my visit, in this collection. It appears the videos are too big to upload to this blog post.
Fund raising for the girls' house is nearly complete now, finishing off the entire building, including also the boys' house and an additional room, will cost about £2500 or $3000. Would be delighted for any contributions you are able to make, if you are happy sending money to my bank account as below I will pass it straight on and pay for the international transfer of funds myself. Thank you very much for your support!
