Following on directly from yesterday's blog.
You will appreciate that, this time round, I was in the departure area well in advance of time. Just to irritate me further, the plane was running slightly late - had the morning flight been that late I would have got on it, heigh ho...
Eventually passengers filed past a member of staff scanning tickets, working at a slow walking pace. Until my turn came, when the member of staff stopped, looked at the screen - and immediately a phone with a red flashing light started to ring.
Grief, what is it now? Am I about to be bumped from the flight? The member of staff talked on the phone, crossed out my seat number and put another. Oh, OK, a family wishes to sit together, that's fine. And then to my considerable surprise, the member of staff said, 'Your seat is now 2D, you've been upgraded to business class."
So, why was I chosen? Certainly not because I'm a frequent flyer, this is the first time I've bought my own South African airways ticket. It could be random, I suppose. Was somebody taking pity on my bad day?
So, business class, a bigger seat, more leg room - and the food was incredible! Particularly the cold bits (ie. those supposed to be cold) were really good. Time seemed to go by much more quickly as the 4 courses were indivdually served. Would I like a newspaper? A magazine? A hot towel? Some chocolates? Better not get used to this!
So, on the plus side, Eggs Benedict for breakfast, business class travel, and a valuable lesson. On the negative, a wasted half day and being out of pocket for the single fare. On balance? Not quite sure. Anyway, back at work so need to get on. Thank you for the responses to the blog yesterday!
